Introduction
This is a compilation of research and information resources for
faculty, staff and students in the engineering and technology
fields. Resources for this guide were selected based on the
curriculum offered at Northern Illinois University, College of
Engineering and Engineering Technology. An attempt was made to
cover the most basic sources, therefore, it is not a comprehensive
list but rather a specialized first-service station for engineering
and technology. Items listed under the section: "Indexes to the
Literature" represent those available through the University
Libraries. Indexes to the Literature
- Ei Village - CompendexWeb EiVillage, is a cyberspace community for Engineering and Technology. It includes access to CompendexWeb. CompendexWeb
is one of the most comprehensive databases covering the literature of engineering and technology.
- Current Contents (OVID) OVID provides access to Current Contents. Current Contents is a
multidisciplinary database covering a core of refereed scientific and technical journals. It can be searched from 1994.
- Uncover (IO) It is database of general coverage with several hundred engineering and technology journals. It is available through the Online Catalog interface.
- Applied Science & Technology Index (LEARN). It is a basic index for engineering and technology topics. Available through the LEARN network interface.
- INSPEC (OVID) INSPEC is the world's leading indexing and abstracting service for physics, electrical and electronic engineering, computer science and technology. It is available only on request at Founders Library reference desks. Searches are preformed by the librarian.
- MathSciNet MathSciNet is a leading indexing and reviewing service for the mathematical sciences and its applications.
- ABI/Inform (FirstSearch) FirstSearch It is a business and management database with a large number of full text articles.
- GeoRef GeoRef . It is a leading index to the world literature of geological sciences. It includes engineering and technological aspects.
- PAIS (LEARN).Public Affairs Information Service. This database covers many aspects related to technology and society. It is available through the LEARN network interface.
- ArticleFirst (FirstSearch) FirstSearch ArticleFirst covers articles in journals, including science and technical journals since 1990.
- PapersFirst (FirstSearch) FirstSearch PaperFirst covers papers published in conferences, symposiums, workshops and meetings since 1993.
- ContentFirst (FirstSearch) FirstSearch ContentsFirst covers table of contents pages of several hundred journals including science and technical journals since 1990.
- Proceedings (FirstSearch) FirstSearch Proceedings is an index to proceedings of conferences, symposiums, workshops and meetings since 1993.
- WilsonSearch (FirstSearch) FirstSearch It is a database of general coverage including technology. It has 430 periodicals in full text.
- IAC - Expanded Academic Index (IAC) IAC It is a general index service; it includes science and technical journals since 1994. A good percentage of the articles are full text.

- USA Patent and Trade Office (www.uspto.gov/) PTO The US Patent and Trademark Office is the official depository agency in the United States for patents and trademarks. The Site Search engine allows one to search the US Patent Bibliographic database from 1976.
- STO's Internet Patent Search Systems (sunsite.unc.edu/patents/intropat.html) STO It provides a number of tools to help perform patent searches.
- IBM Patent Server (www.ibm.com/patents) IBM It accesses over 26 years of U.S. Patents and Trademark Office patent descriptions. This database contains over two million patents since 1971 with full text and images for the last 23 years.
- World Intellectual Property Organization (www.wipo.org) WIPO This is a United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of the protection of intellectual property throughout the world.
Industry - Products and Services
- IndustryNet (www.industry.net) IndustryNet IndustryNet provides information for over 90,000 industrial products.
- Thomas Register (www.thomasregister.com/index.html) THOMAS REGISTER . It provides information on 155,000 U.S. and Canadian companies. This is a catalog of industrial products and services
with over 3,100 supplier catalogs online.
Industry Specifications
- ASTM (www.astm.org) ASTM The American Society for testing Materials writes standard test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classifications and terminology related to metals, paints, plastics, textiles, petroleum, construction, energy, the environment, consumer products, medical services and devices, computerized systems, electronics and many other areas. "ASTM Store" searches for all ASTM publications including some 10,000 ASTM standards.
- IHS (www.ihs.com) IHS Information Handling Services is the largest private source of engineering, technical and regulatory information.
- Global (global.ihs.com) Global Global Engineering Documents is a partner of IHS. A search engine can localize all documents available from IHS.
- ANSI (www.ansi.org) ANSI American National Standards Institute serves as administrator and coordinator of the United States private sector voluntary standardization system. Over 11,500 approved ANSI standards can be searched on this page.
- UL (www.ul.com) UL Underwriters Laboratories is a leading
certification organization in the United States. Its role is to provide product safety testing and certification. A list of UL's
standards is available.
- JISC (www.hike.te.chiba-u.ac.jp/ikeda/JIS/index.html) JISC The Japanese Industrial Standards Committee is responsible for the Japan voluntary national standards for industrial and mineral products. A search engine accesses JIS's standards in English.
- ISO (www.iso.ch) ISO The International Organization for Standardization is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies from some 100 countries. The ISO Catalogue provides access to the list of ISO's standards.
Technical Reports
- NTIS (www.ntis.gov/) NTIS The National Technical Information Service provides access for government-sponsored U.S. and worldwide scientific, technical, engineering and business related information. "NTIS OrderNow Online" searches publications added to the NTIS collection within the last 90 days. NTIS is also developing a repository of Industry Standards documents.
- NASA Technical Reports Server (techreports.larc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/NTRS) NASA . It contains a keywords search engine to seventeen NASA databases, including NACA full text reports.
- DOE Reports Bibliographic Database (www.osti.gov/html/dra/dra.html) DOE DOE Reports Bibliographic Database contains citations for DOE sponsored scientific and technical reports from 1994 to the present.
- Digital's SCR Research Reports (www.digital.com/software/index.html#ama) DIGITALDigital's Document Search Service page provides access to a large number of full text reports published by Digital.
- Unified Computer Science TR Index (www.cs.indiana.edu:80/cstr/search) TR Index . It provides a searchable index for thousands of technical reports and other documents related to computer science and its applications.
